Her focus is on the transformative experience of ocean swimming, and the impact of climate change and human behaviour on sea creatures and the environment.

Kjar's work is influenced by her own sea-faring heritage and her interest in mythology, history, and science.

Through her art, she draws connections between navigation and way-finding, both in the ocean and in life.

Barbie Kjar is a lecturer in Printmaking and Drawing, and her work is held in significant collections such as the National Gallery of Victoria and the Australian National Gallery.
